Bioluminescent Bay in Cayman: a night-tour guide
On a dark night in the North Sound, the water lights up electric blue with every movement, one of Cayman's most magical and least-known experiences. Here is how to see the bioluminescence, and how to do it right.
What the glow actually is
Bioluminescent Bay is a protected spot in the North Sound where micro-organisms called dinoflagellates emit a flash of blue light when the water around them is disturbed. Trail a hand or a paddle and the water sparkles; fish dart away as streaks of light. On the right night it is genuinely otherworldly, and entirely natural.
When to go
Darkness is everything. The glow is brightest on moonless nights, away from light pollution, so tours run after dark and plan around the lunar calendar, book around the new moon for the strongest display, and expect a fainter show near a full moon. Calm, clear nights are best.

You reach the bay by guided kayak or boat tour across the North Sound, most depart from the Rum Point / Cayman Kai or North Sound side. Crucially, do not wear sunscreen or bug spray, chemicals harm the organisms and you may be asked to rinse off.
